Etruscan Coast what to see and do

Timeless charm

The Etruscan coast is the splendid area in which we find ourselves: a stretch of coastline on the Tuscan coast with an ancient past. This stretch of coastline takes its name from the Etruscan people who left a memory of their ancient civilisation here.

Enogastronomy

There are many typical products of the Tuscan tradition that you can taste in the area: the absolute prince is wine, of which you can visit the museum in Castagneto Carducci, or taste a few good glasses in one of the wine cellars of the Bolghieri consortium.

Tuscan tradition can also be found in the production of oil, as in the oil mills in the surrounding area: Il Casone Antico di Vada with the oil of the Saccomani family, the ancient Segalari oil mill of the Serni family or Oliveto Fonte di Foiano, both in Castagneto Carducci.

Many festivals enliven the villages around our campsite and allow us to discover the flavours of Tuscany and the Maremma: “Un Mare di gusto” fish fair in San Vincenzo, the Sagra del Carciofo di Riotorto (in the town of Piombino), “Castagneto a Tavola” where the traditional cuisine of the village meets the excellence of wine, and our edition of “Calici di Stelle” where you can taste the local Bolgheri wines. And let’s not forget the autumn festivals in Sassetta, with three weekends dedicated to “brusta”, or barbecuing: Sagra del Cacciatore, del Tordo and della Castagna.

Family activities

The pride and joy of our area is undoubtedly the Cavallino Matto Amusement Park with roller coasters, water games and shows! For a bit more adrenaline, try the Giardino sospeso, the adventure park with courses for adults, young people and children. And if that is not enough, another wonderful adventure park is Il Tasso Scatenato, set in the Bandite di Scarlino forest complex: close to the beach but surrounded by nature.

There is also the Pinocchio Park for children, where Collodi’s sweet puppet takes you on a magical journey through fairy tales. If you prefer other fish to the whale that ate Geppetto, visit the Livorno Aquarium, with its sea eagles, Napoleon fish, green turtles, seahorses, clown fish and many other species.

To learn while having fun, choose the Gallorose BioPark, a true return to nature with 120 different species of animals. If our water park isn’t enough for you, try the Acquavillage in Cecina or the one in Follonica: you will feel like you are in Hawaii, with its slides, pools and water games!

Cultural Proposals

Some of the enchanting places include the town of San Gimignano, known as the City of 72 Towers, or Massa Marittima with its famous fountain of abundance, or the Tarot Garden with sculptures by the artist Niki de Saint Phalle inspired by the famous cards.
For a trip back in time, we recommend the Val di Cornia Parks, with nature and archaeological trails: the group includes the San Silvestro Archaeology and Mining Park, which can be visited on a special little train in the ancient mines, and the Archaeological Museum of the Populonia area in Piombino, which will let you relive daily life in prehistoric times. To learn about the Etruscans, who gave their name to our territory, visit the Guarnacci Museum in Volterra.
Do you prefer the Middle Ages? Visit the Basilica of San Galgano with the sword in the stone that inspired myths and legends, take part in the historical re-enactment of the Balestro del Girifalco or visit the Museum of the Castle and medieval ceramics.

Nature Itineraries

Ours is one of the most beautiful areas in Italy, to be discovered on foot, by bike or on horseback. The Parco di Poggio Neri in Sassetta, an ancient village in the Val di Cornia, offers many paths through the woods on the surrounding hills, from the mining past.
The Piombino Promontory also offers trekking and mountain-biking routes through the woods and the sea panorama, with truly evocative views from Baratti to Piombino. Explore Macchia di Magona, with its rich fauna, from roe deer to migratory birds, and its Biogenetic Nature Reserve with an experimental arboretum of Mediterranean plants. There are 16 itineraries within the maquis, all to be discovered by bike, on horseback or on foot! Another enchanting place with flamingos, wild geese, mallards and many other birds is the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve in Castiglione di Pescaia, with its marshland routes and boat trips.
Other noteworthy natural parks include the Migliarino Regional Park (at San Rossore, Massaciucoli), which can be explored by trekking, cycling or canoeing, and which includes the LIPU oasis at Massacciuccoli, which can be explored entirely on wooden walkways over the marshland; and the Maremma Regional Park, known as the Uccellina Park, the largest park in Tuscany and also the most famous, which offers a very wide range of activities and is at its best in spring.
